Project H.O.O.D.’s Violence Prevention Team: A Positive Presence in Our Community
Video: Watch Our Violence Prevention Team in Action
Project H.O.O.D.’s Violence Prevention Team has become a reliable presence in Chicago’s Woodlawn and Englewood communities. Major street organizations in the city have been broken down into factions. These factions may change; depending on what block a person may be on or by which direction the youth may have to travel to and from school.
If a person enters the wrong area, trouble may ensue.
Many members of our team have the same background as some in our community. This helps them to take the pulse of the neighborhood and to stop potential conflicts before they escalate into violence.
Self-harm is also a form of violence.
Our Team knows first-hand the mental toll their environment can take. Young people are often in mental distress or depression while looking for a way out. Our Team steps in to offer resources and help a young person may not know is available to them.
Taking on violence in our city is not an easy feat but our team is working hard to come up with new strategies every day.
Lights in the Night
Every Saturday night, the Project H.O.O.D. Violence Prevention Team does a pop-up event in a different area of the community. The “Lights in the Night” pop-ups put the “neighbor” back in “neighborhood.”
Free haircuts, a bouncy house for the kids, movie night, barbeques, are just some of the free offerings from the team. The community comes out to have a great time and we look forward to seeing more of you soon!
Be sure to check our Events page, watch for our emails, and social posts to see where the next Lights in the Night pop-up event will be!
