Project H.O.O.D. is Moving!

It was in 2012 that Pastor Corey B. Brooks founded Project H.O.O.D. on the roof of a crime-infested motel; the same year that the FBI ranked Chicago as the Murder Capital of the United States. 

A defining component of Project H.O.O.D.’s mission was to stop the senseless violence that had gripped our city. And, across the street from his office at New Beginnings Church, Brooks could see that crime every day: A crime-infested motel with an owner that did nothing to stop the drugs and violence taking place on the property.

In the dead of winter, Brooks camped out on the roof of that motel. After 94 days, a galvanized community, and a generous donation of $100,000 from movie mogul Tyler Perry, Brooks could purchase the lot and tear down the motel.

Project H.O.O.D. began serving the community with a free summer camp for kids, vocational training for those who needed a fresh start, Friday night REFUGE for teens to have a safe space to socialize, and other socioeconomic programs to combat poverty and violence.

Still committed to stopping violence and offering opportunities to raise the community out of poverty, Brooks went to work on a new Project H.O.O.D. Community Center to replace the motel. New partnerships formed. One of which was Walgreens. 

Walgreens offered Project H.O.O.D. the remaining months on their lease, and Project H.O.O.D. began operating out of their former space at 6330 S. King Drive. That lease is now expiring, and Project H.O.O.D. will move operations to New Beginnings Church of Chicago at 6620 S. King Drive. 

Fundraising for the new Community Center is ongoing, and Project H.O.O.D. remains committed to the youth of our city. Imagine growing up without vocational training and recreation nearby...it limits choices, thinking, and opportunity.
